So, this is not to bring anyone down or rain on anyone’s parade, especially on a day that’s supposed to be happy for many....but it’s a good lesson that important days and holidays can mean very different things to many different people. Case in point: For a lot of folks, today is Valentine’s Day, but for me and my family, today is the day that, 20 years ago, I lost my best friend, my anchor, my beacon, my Dad. I said goodbye to him that morning (it was a Saturday) not knowing it would be the last time, in this “lifetime.” I had an opportunity to spend some time with him that day, but I chose to sleep in. Of course, I couldn’t have known...his death was a complete shock. I am so grateful to have my other anchor, my mom, still with me, and of course, my ever-resilient sister. We’re the only humans on the planet that can fully understand the depth of his loss, and share a love and the grief of this beautiful man.

My faith in God is a work in progress, but it has brought me comfort and a hope of one day seeing my Father again. My belief is that he is not in heaven, but is merely sleeping, alive in God’s memory, if you will. My hope, however silly to some, is that my family will be reunited one day. Those are things, along with a heavy dose of music & laughter, that keep me going despite life’s setbacks. I hope you also have a circle of comfort, friends, family, and a belief that buoy you through days that mean something completely different from what nearly, it seems, everyone else is feeling. Miss you, Dad, you were incomparable.❤️
